What is a concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. It occurs when someone experiences a very large blow to the head, which then causes their brain to shake violently and collide with the skull of their head. This causes the nervous system in your brain to temporarily freeze. During the concussion the brain is injured. After experiencing a concussion, there could be many side effects and memory loss is a main one. (What Happens to The Brain During A Concussion)
This usually happens because when you have a concussion there is bruising on the brain and that is what causes all the headaches, which in the worse cases can lead to memory loss. More long term effects can include mood swings and emotional changes. These long term effects happen because the brain did not heal properly or long enough for the person to start playing sports again.

Symptoms of a Concussion
Symptoms of a concussion can take days, weeks, months, or even years to develop in a person. The symptoms can be physical, emotional, or cognitive. Some symptoms that can occur are loss of consciousness, confusion, dizziness, blurry vision, nausea or vomiting, headaches, memory loss, balance issues, and sensitivity to light or sound. Every concussion will not have all of these symptoms occur, but they are possibilities.
These symptoms can last for as long as the concussion is there. If you take the right steps to recover from the injury and take the right amount of time to rest, then the symptoms should fade away.

Long Term Effects
The possible long term effects of concussions vary widely, but there are two major effects that we are going to focus on. The two main ones are the emotional/mood effects and the cognitive/personality effects. a concussion can have serious effects on the way a person's brain works after the injury. It can cause depression and anxiety problems, which then further effect the person's mood because being depressed and having anxiety is a mental disorder. It can also cause confusion in the brain, which can also lead to mood swings (Nordqvist, J.).
The long term effects it has on the cognitive/personality part of the person is once all this trauma happens because of how traumatic it is on the brain many personality changes may occur. This is because a concussion can cause memory loss, which then leads to the change in personality. another cognitive effect is that it leads to attention loss, so it is harder to pay attention and focus on different things. This can also cause problems with sleep by making it difficult to fall asleep (Nordqvist, J.).

Conclusion
In conclusion, concussions should not be taken lightly. They are a serious trauma to the brain and if they are not healed correctly then the effects could be there for a life time. when the brain is bruised and shaken up that badly medical attention, rest, and recovery is needed. Take the amount of time oyu need to be healed all the way, so you can make sure the brain is protected and working the right way.
